(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 1, 2012) Journalists from the three ethnic communities that were most impacted during the 1992 Los Angeles Riots (a.k.a. Saigu) will be on the CSUN campus 4 p.m. on April 25th to tell the stories that the mainstream media left untold.
Even after 20 years of efforts to heal their wounds and to have better a understanding of each other's struggles, Korean American, African American and Hispanic American communities still feel that they face many barriers in understanding each other.
One of such barriers is the lack of understanding of the riots from each other's points of view.
Four panelists for this event, Jin Ho Lee of Radio Korea, Karen Slade of KJLH, Ruben Tapia of Radio Billingue/KPFK, and K.W. Lee of the Korea Times, were journalists who were at the frontier of their respective communities struggling to unravel one of the most contradictory urban riots in U.S. history.
In this public event, audiences will have a rare opportunity to listen to the archived radio programs produced by the panelists 20 years ago.
As a part of the event, CSUN alumnus Minho Ha (CTVA '10) will premiere his short film, "Love Thy Neighbor," which tells an inspiring story of friendship between a Korean store owner and an African American teenager, which blossomed during a 20-year span.
The event is scheduled to take place Wednesday, April 25, at the Valley Performing Arts Center Lecture Hall 181 at 4 p.m. The Valley Performing Arts Center is located on the south side of campus near the intersections of Lindley Ave. and Nordhoff St.
This event is made possible by funding from the CSUN Distinguished Visiting Speakers Program, Office of Graduate Studies and co-sponsored by the CSUN Journalism Department, Asian American Studies Department, Pan African Studies Department, Political Science Department, Urban Studies Department, and Sociology Department.
All sessions will be broadcast to the Radio Korea TV network. Korean-style refreshments will be provided courtesy of Radio Korea.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, email Dr. Taehyun Kim at taehyun.kim@csun.edu or call (818) 677-3144 or (818) 427-8875. Scan below QR code to view some video interviews and fill out L.A. Riots Opinion Survey. Jin Ho Lee of Radio Korea |
